What is Spina Bifida?
Spina Bifida is a birth defect in which the spinal cord and the spine are not completely developed. There is a range of effects of this damage depending on the severity and location of the spinal cord damage. There are different forms and degrees of severity of spina bifida. Generally, individuals with this condition experience difficulties in controlling their legs, resulting in balance and walking challenges. Because of this decreased control, children with spina bifida often rely of crutches, walkers and wheelchairs for mobility. Children with spina bifida may also have difficulty controlling their arms and hands, resulting in difficulty with fine motor tasks. Those affected by spina bifida also have decreased sensation and use of their bladder and bowel. It is common for students with spina bifida to have latex allergies.
Like individuals without spina bifida, those who have this disability experience a range of cognitive abilities. Students with severe spinal cord damage however, often have several learning difficulties. The Spina Bifida Association of America lists 8 areas where students with spina bifida commonly experience learning difficulties. These include: perceptual motor problems, comprehension, attention, hyperactivity/ impulsive behaviour, memory, organization, sequencing and decision making/problem solving.
